Roman Workshop Led by Paul Harston
Wednesday, 14th April 2004 10am - 12.30pm
or 2.00pm - 4.30pm  £8.00 per session
The primary figure in the Roman tours is the Centurion Paulus Gittus, played by Paul Harston. Gittus is the "posterior Pila" in charge of the worst troops in the Legion, whose motto is "ultimus intra pagna, primus intra taverna!". He brings to life the daily routine of the Roman soldier, the life they lead, the way they were recruited and trained, where they came from, and where they hope to get back to, as well as using the equipment he is wearing and carrying to show roman battle tactics and weapons.

Other characters portrayed are Gaius Valerius Scundus a normal legionary soldier and the legate, the "officer class" figure who would one day become a senator in Rome and was the General in charge of the legion. These characters back up and assist Paul in his talk.
Given a suitable area and weather conditions we can set up an 8 man contibernium tent to conduct work classes in roman mythology, religion, field medicine, writing and communication skills.

One of the unique items of the tour is the children's armour. Made from plastic this faithfully mimics the Lorica Sementata and helmet worn by the soldiers and allows the children to participate in "bootcamp training" where we teach the basics of marching. Where the children's armour has been used in shows it has had a tremendous result in allowing the children to feel a part of history

If you are aged 7-11, you can be a Roman Soldier. Learn about the life, set up camp, wear a suit of armour and learn how to march into battle with the worst troops in the legion, carrying Roman shields. Eat Roman Lunch with us or bring a picnic.
Hot lunch to order in advance £5.50. Choice of pork sausages, chicken nuggets, baton carrots, broccoli, creamed potatoes, jelly and ice cream.
Or bring your own picnic, tables provided. Ice cream, crisps and soft drinks on sale.
Tea Party for a minimum of 10 children £9.00 per child plus crackers. A vanilla or chocolate sponge cake can be made to order with a photograph image iced on the top.
