LUNCHTIME LECTURES @ CLONTER

Images of a Golden Age: Dutch 17th Century Painting

Richard Lockett, MA (Oxon), MA (Lond)
Tuesday, April 19th 2005
 Arrive/Coffee 11.00 am Lecture 11.30am. Lunch 12.45pm, Lecture 2.00pm - 3.00pm

This title was used for an exhibition produced by the speaker at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery in 1989, an exhibition designed to show artistic activity in the main urban centres of the new Republic.

Dutch artists developed new ideas such as realistic as well as idealised landscape which had only just achieved an independent status in European painting. Many of these new ideas were to be taken up by the English School in the 18th Century.

The first session of the day will explore the range of the Dutch achievement from still life to history painting. The second session will look in more detail at the portrayal of people and places, the primary contribution of Dutch 17th Century painter to European art.

Richard Lockett studied History of Art at the Courtauld Institute in London, and became a lecturer at the Barber Institute, University of Birmingham. He joined the Birmingham City Museums Service as Keeper of Fine Art in 1979 and retired as Senior Assistant Director in l995. Since then he has worked as a History Art Consultant, Writer and Lecturer.

Having much enjoyed his lecture on watercolours last year we are very thrilled to welcome him to Clonter again and hope many of you will be able to come.
